Care Of Newborn Kittens During The First Few Weeks

A cat is considered a kitten from birth to age 2 years. Although this entire period is extremely important for the cat's long term health, the initial eight to twelve weeks of the kitten's life are really vital for their future health. This is when the major developmental stages of newborn kittens occurs.

During these first eight to twelve weeks, the kitten learns tasks for example how to eat solid food and how to move around. If you have rescued a kitten who has no mother, you may need to teach the kitten these things yourself, especially weaning a kitten.

Newborn kittens are some of the most adorable pets on Earth-as well as some of the most helpless. Similar to humans, kittens need good care during the first part of their life. Although there are animals that are born up and running, cats are not one of them.

When the kitten is first born, you may want to leave her care mostly up to her mother, if the mother is available. The mother instinctively knows how to take care of her kittens, and her milk is the best nutrition for a newborn kitten. If the mother is not around, then you may feed it kitten formula-never milk.

Up until their 2nd week, they will be nearly helpless. In the next week, their eyes begin to open-they may still be blind for a bit, but gradually they will be able to see.

During the third to fourth weeks, the kitten's ears will begin to open. They will gradually develop their sense of hearing, they also may begin to attempt to walk at this stage, but they will be very unsteady on their feet. Additionally, their teeth will begin to erupt as well.

The following couple weeks are the most interesting, because that is when kitty learns to play! Remember to involve kitty in lots of play and let her meet lots of different people thus she will get friendly.
