To hear particular spiritual conservatives talk about wedding traditions, you would think that they had existed since the first step of time and never change. They go about mainstream wedding day vows, the role of man and woman in marriage, wedding ceremonies, and such, pretending that it's an indestructible tradition that reaches back to the start of time. In truth, the idea of a wedding day tradition is almost wholly foreign to our culture. Conventional weddings meant something much different than even the most conservative weddings nowadays. Nowadays, a wedding tradition is something like using romantic country wedding songs for your very first dance. In times past, country wedding songs were not even close to being on the list!

Back in the day, a wedding was essentially little more than an arrangement for the transfer of property. The wedding bride would be given away by the dad to be the husband's property thereafter. Even though you can see echoes of this wedding day tradition in modern weddings, few people in our society would agree that we have a better, more democratic way of viewing marriage.

That isn't to say that there aren't wedding traditions in our civilization - for instance, the sweet country wedding songs for the first dance. It's just that weddings differ considerably from family to family in addition to society to society. In some families, it is almost an obligation to get drunk at the wedding. If you are not seen to be truly enjoying your-self, consuming copious amounts of booze and food, you're insulting your hosts and their family wedding traditions. In other families, a mainstream wedding day means a fairly somber and sober event. People have fun, but the most meaningful purpose of the wedding is to mark a life-long commitment.

This is the reason so many people today decide to make-up their own wedding traditions. They write their own wedding day vows, arrange their own wedding day ceremonies, and come up with novel, unconventional ideas for the party. As a matter of fact, for such an universal custom, it is amazing how many variations you can get away with in weddings!

My very favorite wedding tradition is some-thing that started with my grandmother. Even though every one in our family has chosen different styles of wedding day decorations, given slightly different wedding day vows, and served different food at the wedding reception, one thing has always remained the same. At every wedding, we release butterflies when the bride and bridegroom kiss. It sounds kind of silly, I know, but if you saw it, you'd understand. You really have to be there to witness how gorgeous an effect it's! It really marks the day as unique, an event meant to be remembered forever.
