can I operate a icom ic-718 ham radio with a technician license?

For Christmas I am getting an icom ic-718 HF ham radio (hopefully). I am scheduled to take my test in january.. can I operate this radio with a technician license. It uses the bands 160-10. or do I have to have a general license? Also will I be able to make local contacts with this radio?

You will be able to use a portion of 10 meters with a tech. license. On 10 you can make local contacts. Typically, most local communications are done on vhf or uhf though, so you may not hear too much on 10.
