How can I listen to Mission Control and Space Shuttle communications on my regular police scanner?

Matt R asked:

Im looking for frequencies that I can input into my police scanner so I can listen to radio communications between the shuttle and mission control.
I live in Northern NJ and am looking to see if any amateur radio buffs are rebroadcasting shuttle communications over frequencies that I can input in my police scanner. I want to be able to listen to the mission while I’m driving around at work.

    you can’t. its private.

That doesn’t work. It’s not like they broadcast their conversations on police frequencies all over the world! They use their own frequency and only send it where they need it. If you want to listen in, try NASA TV on cable.

Yes you can lsiten on a police scanner actually so ignore the posts above. I don’t know the frequencies though, it depends where you are and what they’re using, try googling it.

They use encrypted frequencies as a matter of national security.

I don’t know about tapping into NASA’s direct communications with the shuttle but the ISS does have an onboard HAM radio setup. I believe the frequency is 145.990 MHz FM.

    Also, here’s a site with some info…

    Hope this helps…

Edit: Found another link. There are some places suggesting that NASA’s transmissions are encrypted now. Given the problems over the last several years this may well be true. So I don’t know if any of these frequencies will do any good.

Hey guys radio frequencies are used on different bandwidths. There is a crystal inside every radio receiver. Each bandwidth has its own crystal to pick up certain frequencies. Police Scanners my not work to pick up the frequencies from NASA’s communications because they have a limited radio frequency wavelengths. Besides you will not beable to receive the transmissions from iss unless they are right above you, have a satelite uplink, or you live next to mission control and have a hard line to there radio antennas. There is no way to listen in on these, because the FCC will not sell the crystals to just anybody.
