What do you mean by a “regular GPS”? You mean like a Garmin Nuvi? The ones that mount to your windshield and give you turn-by-turn voice directions? I doubt it. It might work, but not well.

You’d be better off to get a handheld GPS for hikers, hunters, geocachers, etc. Go to garmin.com and look for the Etrex or Rhino models. I have an etrex, and it seems to be pretty good. Or look at the Magellan GPSs. too.

Keep in mind that for either to work well, they will need to have the maps database loaded on them. When I got mine, that was an extra charge. I don’t know if it is now. But mine has both roads and towns and exits, as well as maritime waypoints, like lights, buoys, etc.

Garmin handheld models GPS 76, or Gps 72 both are preloaded with marine data. Go here to explore the features they have.
